Failures are easily avoidable if we make some sort of checklist in our life and that’s what Atul Gawande explained in his book ‘The Checklists Manifesto’. Atul explains that it doesn’t matter that which field you belong to, if you make a simple checklist and properly implement it in your life then you can easily avoid failures not only in medicine field but also in other fields like finance, aviation and construction.
Gawande described in his book that in the field of medicine, we do not fail because of the lack of knowledge of our work but because we didn’t implement our knowledge properly. He says that, in Medicine, it is extremely important for a doctor to apply his knowledge correctly. He shows that checklist work like a reminder that in order to achieve high performance we need to follow certain steps.
He further argues that checklist is not only helpful in medical field but also in other fields. To strengthen his argument he gave an example where he met three directors who were making an investment in companies and those had no chance of getting a huge profit. But by making an impressive and highly practical checklist they have saved themselves from a foreseen failure.
Gawande implemented checklists in various hospitals all around the world. At first many surgeons refuses to implement it. He additionally puts forth the defense for re-considering cooperation and teamwork in hospitals. After his long term efforts and trials, he figured out how to make accomplishment for his checklist. After using the checklist for over 3 months, 80% of various surgeons, nurses and others reported that checklist was quite easy to use and it did improve their health and care performance. Checklist worked and the results were undeniable.
Atul described in his book that in order to achieve and maintain high performance you need to make sure that you are eliminating avoidable mistakes. The best thing about checklist is its versatility. Checklists are best to use where you are bit concerned about the things that they might not go your way. For instance in aviation industry, Pilots can make a practical and precise checklist in order to make sure that they have taken all necessary safety measures.
Gawande also explains that the checklist should be short and precise and it should be between five and nine items. He further elaborates that the wording should be exact and practical.
The Checklists Manifesto explains that main goal is not to just tick the relevant boxes but the most important thing is the practical implication of teamwork and discipline. As an individual we keep on acquiring knowledge in various fields, but the most successful individual will be that person who can practically implement knowledge in his field. Despite of the fact, that the book is short and precise but its suggestions and recommendations are amazing. Checklist is just helping you in achieving high performance in your relevant field and if it’s not helping in improving your performance then it means that you are not making it right.
