Simon Sinek’s second book is the extension of his previous best seller book ‘Start With Why’. He presented in his book that Why plays an important role in building an organization by describing various motivational stories. In his book, he described that true leaders are those who have the strong ability to protect others by sacrificing themselves.
Simon explains in his book “Leaders Eat Last” that there are two type of employees one type of employees are those who love their jobs and the others are those who are unsatisfied with their jobs. Job satisfaction depends on the environment of an organization.
Environment of organizations completely depend on their leaders. Companies who have self-interested leaders will have self-interested employees. Those leaders who worked beyond their self- interest will have honest and loyal employees. He described that it is called a ‘Circle of Safety’ because of that employees feel protected, focused and as a result they will become the true assets for the organization.
Sinek presented some examples from the past by describing that in 1920s, World War and during the era of Great Depression teamwork was the only way for human survival. He further illustrates that in today’s fast growing economy traders use same survival system that was used by Cavemen years ago.
In the case of South Airlines each and every CEO is aware of their responsibility that’s why they lead from the front. Unsuccessful companies like Enron and WorldCom failed because of the one common reason that their leaders did not serve their employees well and lack of loyalty & teamwork were the main reasons behind their failure.
Author described in his book that there are four chemicals in our body which are Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin, and Oxytocin and they plays a vital role in the success of an organization. In the absence of Circle of Safety, people protect themselves instead of protecting the organization.
He stated that Serotonin and Oxytocin are selfless chemicals and they help in building team work, trust and loyalty where as Endorphins and Dopamine are selfish chemicals because they make humans selfish and as a result those self centered human beings work only for selfish aims and objectives.
Leadership means not just to lead people but to develop sense of responsibility in people and to think beyond their self interests and objectives. All successful companies have one thing in common and that is their selfless leaders. In difficult times, selfish needs like to earn more money is a short-term goal and it will take you nowhere but sincere team with loyal people will be your real asset.
Simon states that Leadership requires you to be more responsible and to do more hard work. We are human beings not just to think selfishly and serve ourselves but we are here to serve others. Having a profit generating company will not make any one a great leader. A Great leader is that who believes in team work, empower his employees and develop them into future leaders.
